ACNE FAQs

What Causes Acne?

Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples. While often associated with teenagers, it is also common in adults and can significantly impact confidence and quality of life.

Research shows acne-causing bacteria may form a biofilm on the skin, making breakouts more persistent and harder to treat. At SunCoast Skin Coolum, we understand that multiple factors can contribute to this condition, including:

  • Hormonal changes (puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, PCOS)

  • Excess oil production leading to clogged pores

  • Genetic predisposition to breakouts

  • Gut microbiome imbalances impacting skin health

  • Stress, which increases inflammation and oil levels

  • Dietary triggers like high sugar or dairy intake

  • Environmental factors such as humidity, pollution, and poor skincare habits

  • Medications (e.g., corticosteroids, lithium, certain birth control pills)

  • Overuse of harsh skincare products that damage the skin barrier

Understanding these causes is key to providing effective treatments.

ACNE SUPPORT GROUP

Acne is often driven by underlying inflammation, impaired skin barrier function, and complex interactions between hormones, bacteria, and lifestyle factors. Because each person’s skin is different, effective treatment begins with identifying the root cause of your breakouts.

At SunCoast Skin, we provide expert assessment and personalised treatment plans tailored to your unique skin type and triggers. Whether you’re dealing with hormonal, adult, or treatment-resistant breakouts, our evidence-based solutions are designed to restore clear, healthy skin—safely and effectively.

This may include:

Topical treatments : Non prescriptive to prescription retinol, AHA and BHA, natural vegetable based pre and probiotic antioxidant complexes and peels.

Oral therapies : Doctor-prescribed treatments may include tailored options based on your individual skin needs and hormonal profile.

LED and BBL : Use of blue light and red light therapies as a useful adjunct to reduce bacteria load and aid in collagenesis.

Nano Laser Peel: This is a very superficial laser “peel” that is used in conjunction with the BBL to aid in the treatment of active breakouts.

Post inflammatory pigmentation : this is a darker brown (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation PIH) or red (post inflammatory erythema PIE) pigment that is left behind after a pimple goes away. More commonly found in darker skin. 80% will fade after a year with some persisting. Treatment includes prescription topicals like HQ and retinoids as well as oral TXA.

Physical scars : These include icepick, rolling and box car scars (aka atrophic or depressed scars) and hypertrophic (raised) scars.
