COSMETIC LESION REMOVAL
At SunCoast Skin Coolum, our experienced and highly qualified specialist GPs offer safe and effective cosmetic removal of small to medium-sized benign skin lesions, including moles, age spots, seborrhoeic keratoses, cysts, skin tags, and other non-cancerous growths. Whether for cosmetic reasons or to improve comfort, our procedures are designed to deliver natural results while adhering to the highest standards of clinical safety and care.
Each lesion is carefully assessed during a comprehensive medical consultation to ensure it is suitable for cosmetic removal. Your doctor will examine the type, location, and behaviour of the lesion, and discuss the most appropriate treatment options. Where necessary, a biopsy or histological analysis may be recommended to confirm the lesion is benign before proceeding with removal.
Our doctors use a range of evidence-based techniques tailored to your individual needs. These include:
- Minor surgical excision
- Diathermy
- Medical-grade laser therapy
The choice of technique depends on various factors such as lesion depth, skin type, cosmetic concerns, and healing expectations. Regardless of the method used, our primary focus is delivering aesthetic outcomes while ensuring a high margin of safety and minimal downtime.
Queensland Health–Certified Laser Safety
Dr Cheryl Choong holds a medical-specific laser licence issued by Queensland Health Radiation Safety, which legally authorises her to operate lasers for the removal of skin lesions in a medical setting. This qualification is distinct from cosmetic or beauty-based laser licences, ensuring that all procedures performed at SunCoast Skin meet strict safety, hygiene, and compliance standards as outlined by Queensland legislation.
This certification reinforces our clinic’s commitment to patient safety, best-practice protocols, and regulatory excellence. Our use of medical-grade technology in a clinical environment ensures risks are minimised and results are optimised.

About the Procedure
Lesion removals at SunCoast Skin are typically performed under local anaesthetic as a day procedure, allowing you to return home the same day. The procedure is generally well tolerated, and most patients resume light daily activities shortly after.
POST PROCEDURE AFTERCARE:
To ensure optimal healing and minimise the risk of complications, we recommend the following aftercare:
- Keep the treated area clean and dry for at least 7 days, or as advised by your doctor.
- Avoid picking, scratching, or disturbing the area to prevent infection and scarring.
- Do not apply non-sterile creams, ointments, or antiseptic solutions (such as Betadine or Dettol), unless directed by your clinician.
- Avoid direct UV exposure to the treated area for at least a week. Use broad-spectrum SPF if exposure is unavoidable.
- Refrain from activities or environments that expose the wound to dust, dirt, organic matter, or other occupational hazards, especially if working outdoors or in high-contamination areas.
- Basic pain relief such as paracetamol may be taken if needed. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., ibuprofen) in the first 48 hours unless advised.
- You will be offered a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after the procedure to assess healing and address any concerns.
Our team will provide you with individualised instructions based on the lesion type, removal method, and location to support safe healing and the best cosmetic outcome.
