ADHD IN WOMEN OFTEN LOOKS DIFFERENT.

WHEN OVERWHELM ISNT “JUST STRESS”.

A Thoughtful, Doctor-Led Approach to ADHD and Mental Health Care

We believe ADHD care should be thorough, individualised and never rushed. Our assessments are designed to explore symptoms in the context of your broader health, lifestyle, mental wellbeing and life stage, including hormonal and menopausal transition.

Difficulties with focus, overwhelm, executive function and emotional regulation can overlap with a range of other conditions, including anxiety, burnout, sleep disturbance, trauma, hormonal change and mood disorders. For this reason, assessment does not necessarily result in a diagnosis of ADHD, and we also explore other possible mental health and medical contributors to symptoms as part of a comprehensive assessment approach.

Our doctors also take an integrated approach to women’s health, supporting patients through perimenopause and menopause while considering the broader impact hormonal changes can have on mood, cognition, focus, sleep and overall wellbeing.

Where appropriate, care may involve education, behavioural strategies, psychological support, lifestyle interventions, referral for formal psychology or psychiatry assessment, and discussion around whether medication may or may not be suitable. We take a collaborative, evidence-based and multidisciplinary approach tailored to the individual.

Servicing the wider Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. No referrals needed.

What to Expect During an ADHD Assessment

This comprehensive assessment involves dedicated consultation time to explore your current symptoms, childhood history, functional challenges and overall health. Some patients may require questionnaires, supporting documentation or follow-up appointments as part of the assessment process.

Assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis of ADHD or prescription of medication. Recommendations are based on clinical assessment, individual circumstances and evidence-based practice.

Where appropriate, patients may also be referred to psychologists, psychiatrists or other allied health professionals as part of a broader multidisciplinary care approach.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADHD IN WOMEN

ADHD in women and girls can present differently to the stereotypical image many people associate with the condition. Symptoms are often internalised, masked or attributed to stress, anxiety, burnout or hormonal changes — particularly in high-functioning women and girls balancing careers, school, university, parenting, relationships and the mental load of everyday life.

Some women may experience:
  • Difficulty focusing or sustaining attention
  • Chronic overwhelm or mental fatigue
  • Forgetfulness or disorganisation
  • Trouble prioritising or completing tasks
  • Emotional sensitivity or difficulty regulating emotions
  • Procrastination or difficulty starting tasks
  • Restlessness, racing thoughts or difficulty switching off
  • Feeling constantly busy yet struggling to stay on top of things
  • Burnout cycles despite functioning highly outwardly
  • Worsening symptoms during perimenopause or menopause
These symptoms can overlap with a number of medical, psychological and hormonal conditions, which is why comprehensive assessment is important.
