Menopause & Perimenopause

Understanding the Changes in Your Body

menopause & perimenopause
Perimenopause and menopause are natural stages in a woman’s life, but for many, they can bring significant and sometimes confusing changes.

Hormonal fluctuations can affect how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally. These changes can begin years before menopause itself, and vary from person to person.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transition phase leading up to menopause, often beginning in your 40s, but sometimes earlier.
During this time, hormone levels — particularly oestrogen — begin to fluctuate, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms.

Common symptoms may include:
Irregular periods
Hot flushes or night sweats
Sleep disturbance
Mood changes or anxiety
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
Changes in libido
Vaginal dryness
This phase can last several years, and symptoms may come and go or change over time.

What is Menopause?

Menopause is defined as the point when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
It marks the end of reproductive years and typically occurs between ages 45–55. While menopause itself is a point in time, the symptoms associated with it can continue for several years beyond.

Why Do Symptoms Occur?

Many of the changes experienced during perimenopause and menopause are driven by fluctuating and eventually declining hormone levels.

These hormonal shifts can affect:
Temperature regulation
Sleep patterns
Mood and cognition
Skin and hair
Bone density
Cardiovascular health
Understanding these changes is the first step in managing them effectively.
